Japanese Soaking Tub
BEFORE
This project included the installation of a Japanese soaking tub with jets on the side of the house. The owners fell in love with the Japanese aesthetic while traveling, so they wanted something that had a similar flavor.
AFTER
We sunk the tub so that it was reminiscent of being in a natural spring surrounded by lush greenery. The aroma of cedar releases with the hot water. Hubbington Forge lights were the perfect addition for illuminating the space, while the Japanese screen softens the expansive space, allowing one to bring attention to the moment.
On the side wall of the hot tub is a hidden closet that holds tatami mats and a custom aluminum frame that can be inserted over the hot tub lid. When the hot tub is not in use, the tatami are laid out in a rectangle pattern. The region where the flowers are located is called a tokonoma: an alcove for a Japanese scroll and flowers. In some Japanese homes and temples, one side of the tokonoma is supported by a rustic tree that contributes to the wabi-sabi aesthetic. When the seasons call, the owner transforms this space into a tea ceremony hut.
